How to Feel Better: 4 Essential Tips for Managing Emotions

Today I am providing you some tips for how to feel better.

1. Identify the feeling!

Name the feeling you are experiencing. What are you feeling? Avoid labeling it as “Good” or Bad” but give it a name. This gives you control over the emotion.

2. Accept the feeling.

There is nothing wrong with how you feel. You may have a lot of external forces telling you that your feelings are not justified and that you need to get over it, but you feel the way you do for a reason. You are human and all the feeling you experience are normal and appropriate. The feeling is not wrong and you aren’t wrong for feeling this way.

3. Ride the wave.

You are going to be OK. Feelings are like waves in the ocean, they come and go. Sometimes they are large and crash and other times they are rolling and quietly end. The bottom line is that the feeling will go away. You will not feel sad forever, you will not feel angry forever, especially when you can learn to control the feeling, accept the feeling, and allow the feeling to pass without judgment.

4. Own it.

Express the feeling. We spend so much energy avoiding feeling that we ignore and deny them and then they come back and haunt us. Again you feel the way you do for a reason. You have the right to feel mad, sad, worried, or scared. So go ahead and cry, worry, or get angry. The trick though is to not spend a lot of time doing this. Set an alarm for a set amount of time, 1 hour, 5 minutes, 3 hours, whatever and then express the feeling. This also gives you control over your emotions because you are allowing yourself the time and the energy to express the feeling. Then when the alarm goes off, you stop.
