Understanding the Battle with Eating Disorders: It’s Not a Choice

Why Aren't They Eating? Understanding the Struggle with Eating Disorders 💔🥄

I work with individuals with eating disorders, and a common question from their loved ones is, “Why are they not eating?” 🍽️ It’s important to understand that an eating disorder is not about making a conscious decision to not eat. Yes, someone may restrict food, but no one chooses to starve themselves to death. 🙅‍♀️

We often stigmatize eating disorders by assuming someone is making the choice to live this way. The truth is: NO ONE chooses to starve themselves or become obsessed with weight and dieting. This is not about vanity. To starve yourself and obsess over food is a living hell. 🔥

The Green Monster Inside 👹💭

Having an eating disorder is like having a green monster inside you that refuses to leave. It whispers lies and insults, convincing you that you are not good enough, that you are disgusting, lazy, and unworthy. 😔 The monster’s job is to make you suffer, to drown out your rational thoughts with fear, hatred, and self-loathing. 💭

No one chooses the green monster. The monster chooses you for whatever reason. You didn’t ask for this, and yet it controls your thoughts, your fears, and your life. The internal war this monster creates makes every meal, every bite, a battlefield. 🍽️💥

You Are Not Your Eating Disorder 🌿

The key message here is that you are NOT your eating disorder. The disorder is a manipulative liar, distorting your thinking and convincing you that you must starve yourself. It's critical to remember that individuals battling eating disorders are not choosing to suffer. They want to get better. 🙏

Wellness Tip: Cut People Some Slack 💚

For those of you reading this today, my wellness tip is simple: cut people some slack. Don’t assume that individuals with eating disorders are choosing to feel terrible or suffer. Sometimes, the internal war they face makes it feel like they’re choosing between eating and being punished. 🥀

Let’s not judge. Instead, let’s offer compassion and support. Be there for someone struggling and help guide them toward the resources they need to heal. ❤️ No one chooses to suffer.

If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, help is available. Let’s work together to break the stigma and provide the support they need. 💪
