May Chinn, MA: LPC-Associate

(supervised by Dr. Stephanie Waitt, LPC-S, CEDS)

Welcome! I’m May, and I’m so glad you are here.

We are all affected by our past experiences, how they changed us, and our reactions to those experiences. Sometimes people think their reactions to their experiences don’t “make sense.” In therapy together, I am here to witness your story and help you put the puzzle pieces together. Your reactions do make sense. Our brains are highly adaptive and everything they do is with the goal of protecting and taking care of us. Sometimes, however, our reactions to our past experiences aren’t helpful to us, despite our brain’s best attempts to take care of us. Through therapy, these reactions can be worked through, adjusted to be more helpful to you, and/or replaced with new, more constructive reactions and skills.

Because I believe that YOU are the expert on YOU, this will be a team-working experience, and one I am so excited to embark on with you!

My Qualifications & Philosophies

I recently graduated with my master’s in Counseling Psychology from Texas Woman’s University and am working toward licensure. Though I work with a large variety of clients, I specialize in working with adult adoptees dealing with anger, ambivalence, and/or uncertainty who need someone willing to discuss the nuances, complexities, and dualities in the lives of adult adoptees. Unfortunately complex emotions about adoption are often regarded as taboo in families and society at large. Luckily, no emotion, thought, or feeling is taboo with me.

In therapy, I will not shame you or try to sweep your thoughts and feelings under the rug. I am very willing to dive into discussions about the nuances of difficult subjects. Let’s talk it out! Let’s acknowledge systems of oppression and injustice in the world. Be angry. Challenge society’s narratives. Take back your voice and power.

I see therapy as a place to make sense of your story. What experiences influence the way you show up in and interact with the world around you? As we discover the answers to this question and questions like it, you will have the opportunity to think deeply about how you want to show up in the world and how you want to interact with others. Therapy is the place that is all about you. Let’s get to know you!
